the modern defense once again serves as a showcase for Jacob O’Donnell's mastery of the saxophone and a Jon Hassell-esque futuristic conceptualization of what the instrument can be. Listening to the album causes questions to emerge. Is this still a sax, or is it a bass, a guitar, or steel melting into liquid? Is it meant for humans or cyborgs? Will the modern defense be used as a sort of Rosetta Stone by future civilizations? Keep listening for answers and plenty more questions. Scott Bunn, Recliner Notes
